Impact Fund Denmark is providing its largest ever loan of EUR 183 million to a new large Danish-built wastewater treatment plant in Faisalabad, Pakistan’s third-largest city and centre for the country’s textile industry.
Pakistan currently cleans only 10 per cent of its wastewater. The rest runs untreated into local rivers and canals and is used by agriculture for arable irrigation, which pollutes both the environment and food production. The water can change color depending on which color is used in the area’s distinctive textile production. The new plant will be able to treat 150,000 m3 tonnes of wastewater daily. It will improve water quality for about 765,000 people.
The money is raised by Impact Fund Denmark providing a guarantee that Danske Bank can give the Pakistani Ministry of Finance a loan. At the same time, Impact Fund Denmark pays the interest on the loan.
In addition to the EUR 183 million loan from Impact Fund Denmark, three Danish companies are behind the expertise: Sweco has conducted the feasibility study, NIRAS provides technical assistance and supervision, and Munck Group will design, build and operate the plant. With Danish technology, the plant becomes up to 80 percent self-sufficient with energy via biogas.
These are good Danish solutions that help out in the world. The treatment plant will make a huge difference to the aquatic environment and health in the area.
